Embedded within the middle school learning program at Green School is a yearly middle school camp experience. When I first arrived in 2016, this consisted of a once a year three-night camping adventure somewhere on Bali, divided by grade level and usually taking place in early October.
After my first year of experience in the middle school camp, I saw room for improvement in the camp offerings, planning, and organization. I thus volunteered my time and expertise to the middle school leadership team. Together with another middle school teacher, we scouted new locations and support organizations on the island that would offer the middle school students a new and improved camp experience. After months of planning, we were a week out from October camps when Mt. Agung volcano erupted, and all camps were cancelled.
Teachers and students alike were devastated by the turn of events, but I was determined to give our students a camp experience for the 2017-2018 academic year. I immediately got to work planning a week of adventures for the students, not too far from campus (to stay within the school safety directions in response to the volcano) and included a one-night camp out, movie under the stars, a BBQ, and a bonfire on the campus soccer field.

At the start of the following school year, my third year at Green School, Mt. Agung was still somewhat active and thus, school protocol called for no off-campus overnight fall camps. I was still allowed to plan a week of off-campus activities and spice it up for the students I added in a new component to camp week – The Challenge.
The Challenge week was definitely one of my middle school camp planning, coordinating, and leading successes during my four years at Green School. The students were challenged mentally in challenges like ‘Sinister Sudoku’ and ‘Trivia Challenge’, and physically through challenges like ‘Knot So Fast’. Furthermore, the students fostered their teamwork skills, problem-solving skills in challenges like ‘Hoop Dreams’ and ‘Crack the Coconut’, and developed new skills in some cases in challenges like ‘Trap the Chicken’.
Keep in mind this was only one day of the four days of camp adventures students participated in for the week. Students were invited for their second all middle school camp out, bbq, and movie night on the campus football pitch to top the week off.
